Repair or Replace

When a crack can still be saved

A crack is a chip that got left alone. Once the break starts travelling it becomes a question of length, position, and how much of the damage runs to the edge of the glass. Those three things decide whether resin can still hold it together or whether the windshield has to come out.

The honest answer is that the industry line sits around six inches for most cracks, and shorter than that if the damage reaches the windshield edge or sits directly in the driver’s view. Beyond it, a repair might look acceptable for a while and then fail on the first cold morning or the first hard pothole. We would rather tell you that up front than take your money twice.

The Valley makes cracks run faster

Parking in full sun and then blasting cold air across a hot windshield is the single most reliable way to turn a short crack into a long one. If yours is growing, get it looked at this week rather than next month. Call (956) 636-8300.

Crack Types

The cracks we assess most often

Each of these behaves differently, and each has a different chance of holding a repair.

Straight Line Cracks

A single clean run across the glass. The most repairable crack type when caught under six inches and away from the edge.

Stress Cracks

Cracks that appear with no impact at all, usually from a sharp temperature change. These often signal the glass was already stressed.

Edge Cracks

Damage starting within two inches of the perimeter. These run fast and usually mean replacement, because the edge carries structural load.

Star Breaks With Legs

A chip whose legs have started travelling. Sometimes still repairable if the legs are short and have not reached the edge.

Cracks in the Driver’s View

Even a repairable crack directly in front of you leaves visible distortion. We will explain the trade-off rather than decide it for you.

Contaminated Cracks

Cracks that have sat through rain and road grime. Dirt in the break stops resin bonding cleanly, which lowers the chance of a lasting repair.

Our Process

How we handle a cracked windshield

1

Send Us a Photo

Text the crack to (956) 636-8300 with something for scale. We can usually tell you repair or replace before anyone drives anywhere.

2

On-Site Assessment

We measure the crack, check how close it runs to the edge, and look at whether it sits in your line of sight.

3

Straight Recommendation

If a repair will hold, we repair it. If it will not, we say so and quote the replacement. We do not sell repairs we expect to fail.

4

Repair or Replace

Crack repairs are done on the spot. Replacements need urethane cure time before the vehicle is safe to drive, and we will tell you exactly how long.

Being Straight With You

Why we sometimes talk you out of a repair

A crack repair that fails is worse than no repair at all. You have paid for the work, the crack has kept growing underneath, and you still need the windshield replaced — except now the resin in the break makes a clean replacement slightly harder.

Your windshield is not just weather protection. It carries a meaningful share of the roof’s structural strength in a rollover and it is the backstop your passenger airbag deploys against. That is why we treat long cracks conservatively. If we think a repair is a coin toss, we will tell you it is a coin toss and let you decide with the real odds in front of you.

Crack Repair FAQs

Questions about cracked windshields

As a general guide, up to about six inches, provided it does not reach the windshield edge and is not sitting directly in your line of sight. Beyond that the repair becomes unreliable. Position matters as much as length — a three inch crack running off the edge is a worse candidate than a five inch crack in the middle of the glass.

That is a stress crack, and they are more common here than people expect. Glass that already carries a small flaw or an installation stress can let go with nothing more than a sharp temperature swing — a cold night after a 100-degree day, or hot glass hit with full air conditioning. It is not your fault and it does not mean you hit anything.

Yes, more so than a repaired chip. A crack repair restores strength and stops the damage travelling, but you will still see a line where the break was. If perfect optical clarity matters more to you than cost, replacement is the honest recommendation.

Texas law prohibits anything that obstructs the driver’s clear view, so a crack running through your sightline can absolutely draw a citation and can fail an inspection. Damage low on the passenger side is treated far less strictly. If in doubt, get it dealt with.

Less than most people expect, which is why the majority of our crack repairs are paid out of pocket rather than claimed. Text us a photo and you will get the price before anyone drives out.

Insurance often does cover crack repair, and we bill carriers directly if you would rather go that route — but it is a small slice of what we do and rarely worth the paperwork at our rates.

Plenty of cracks people assume are fatal can still be repaired, and plenty that look small genuinely can’t. Text (956) 636-8300 and we’ll tell you which yours is, honestly, before anyone drives out.
