Why Valley headlights cloud over so fast
Modern headlight housings are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light, but it has no natural ultraviolet resistance at all, so manufacturers spray it with a thin protective coating at the factory. That coating is the part that fails.
Once ultraviolet has worn through it, the plastic underneath begins to oxidise. It goes hazy, then yellow, then chalky. The Rio Grande Valley is close to the worst environment in the country for this: intense year-round sun, high heat, and vehicles that mostly park outside. Headlights that might last a decade further north routinely go cloudy here in three or four years.

Restoration handles surface oxidation. A few problems genuinely need a new housing, and we will tell you which yours is.
UV Yellowing
The classic Valley problem. The factory coating has failed and the plastic underneath has oxidised to a yellow-brown haze.
Cloudy Hazing
A milky film across the lens that scatters your beam. Usually restores extremely well.
Chalky Surface
Advanced oxidation where the surface has gone rough and powdery. Takes more sanding stages but generally comes back.
Sandblasting Pitting
Fine pitting from years of highway grit. Restoration improves it, though very deep pitting may not fully clear.
Internal Moisture
Condensation inside the housing. Restoration will not fix this — it is a seal failure and needs the housing addressed.
Cracked Housings
A cracked lens cannot be restored. We will tell you straight that you need a replacement rather than take your money.
How restoration actually works
Mask and Protect
Paint and trim around the housing get masked off. Sanding compound on your clear coat is not a trade we are willing to make.
Wet Sand in Stages
Progressive grits remove the failed coating and the oxidised layer beneath it. Skipping grades is why cheap jobs come out cloudy.
Polish to Clarity
The lens is machine polished back to optical clarity. This is the stage that decides whether it looks new or merely better.
Seal With UV Coating
A fresh ultraviolet-resistant coating goes on. Without this final step the lens will be yellow again within a year of Valley sun.
Why most cheap restorations fail within a year
You can buy a kit, sand a headlight, polish it, and it will look excellent for a few months. Then it yellows again, often faster and worse than before, and people conclude restoration does not work.
It does work. What went wrong is that sanding removed the factory ultraviolet coating and nothing replaced it, leaving raw polycarbonate directly exposed to some of the harshest sun in the country. The sealing step is the entire job. Sanding and polishing is the easy part that makes it look good on the day; the coating is the part that makes it still look good next summer.

Questions about headlight restoration
How long does headlight restoration last?
With a proper ultraviolet sealant, typically a couple of years or more in Valley conditions — longer if the vehicle is garaged or parked under cover. Without sealing, expect yellowing to return within a year. Where you park matters as much as the work itself.
Is it cheaper than replacing the headlights?
Dramatically. Replacement housings for many modern vehicles run into the hundreds of dollars each before labour, and projector or LED assemblies can be far more. Restoration is a small fraction of that and takes about an hour.
Can every headlight be restored?
Most can. The exceptions are cracked lenses, housings with moisture trapped inside from a failed seal, and damage on the inner surface of the lens — none of which can be reached by working on the outside. We will tell you before starting if yours falls into that group.
Will it really improve my night visibility?
Yes, and usually more than people expect. Heavy oxidation scatters your beam in every direction instead of projecting it down the road, so you lose both distance and definition. Most customers notice the difference on the first drive after dark.
Can you do it at my house?
Yes, all of it is mobile. We need access to the front of the vehicle and about an hour. Shade is helpful but not essential.
