What a rock chip actually does to your windshield
A windshield is two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When a rock hits it, the outer sheet fractures and air works its way into the break. That pocket of air is the problem — it is what makes the damage spread, and it is what makes the chip catch the light and distract you every time you drive into the sun.
Repair works by drawing that air out under vacuum and injecting a clear resin that bonds the glass back together, then curing it hard. Done properly it restores most of the structural strength and stops the damage travelling. What it will not do is make the mark vanish completely — anyone who promises an invisible repair is overselling it. Expect it to become much less noticeable and, more importantly, to stop growing.

Rule of thumb on size
The chip types we see most in the Valley
Highway 83, Expressway 281, and every caliche job site in the mid-Valley throw rock. These are the four shapes that come off them.
Bullseye Chips
A clean circular break with a dark centre, usually from a rounded stone. One of the most reliably repairable types there is.
Star Breaks
A central impact point with short legs radiating out. Very repairable if caught early, but those legs will run in a Valley heat cycle.
Combination Breaks
A bullseye and a star break together. Repairable in most cases, though the finished result is a little more visible.
Pits and Surface Nicks
Shallow damage that has not gone through the outer layer. Often does not need repair at all, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Edge Chips
Damage within a couple of inches of the windshield edge. These are the riskiest, because the edge carries the structural load and cracks run fast from there.

How a chip repair actually goes
Clean and Assess
We clean the damage and check size, depth, and location. If it is not a good candidate for repair we say so before starting, not after.
Vacuum the Air Out
A bridge tool seals over the chip and pulls the trapped air out of the break under vacuum. This is the step that decides how well the repair holds.
Inject and Cure
Optical resin is forced into the break under pressure, then cured hard with UV light so it bonds to the glass rather than sitting on top of it.
Polish and Check
We scrape the surface flush, polish it, and show you the result. You can drive immediately — there is no cure time to wait out.

Questions about chip repair
Will the chip disappear completely?
No, and be wary of anyone who tells you it will. A good repair typically removes most of the visible damage and restores the strength, but a faint mark usually remains where the break was. What matters is that it stops spreading and stops catching your eye in low sun.
How long can I leave a chip before it is too late?
There is no fixed deadline, but every heat cycle works against you, and the Valley gives you a big one every single day. A chip that sits through a summer of 100-degree afternoons and full-blast air conditioning is far more likely to run than one repaired the same week. Sooner is always cheaper.
Can I still drive with a rock chip?
Usually yes, provided it is small and not in your direct line of sight. Texas does not permit damage that obstructs the driver’s clear view, so a chip sitting right in front of you is a different matter. If a crack has started running, get it looked at quickly — the windshield contributes real structural strength in a rollover.
Does a repair weaken my windshield?
The opposite. An unrepaired chip is a weak point where the glass has already failed. A proper resin repair bonds the break and restores most of the original strength. What it cannot do is make the glass better than new.
Do I need to be there while you work?
Not necessarily. Plenty of our customers leave the keys and carry on working. We need access to the vehicle and somewhere reasonably level to park, and ideally shade, though we work around Valley sun all day long.
